Demystifying Groundwater Science and Building Institutions for Sustainable Aquifer Management

Unsustainable use of aquifers will have serious long-term implications on agriculture, food security, and livelihoods in arid and semi-arid regions, and this problem will be further exaggerated in the wake of climate change. Today, the major problems in the groundwater sector in India are the result of the strong notion that groundwater is private property. This notion is resulted mainly due to inadequate scientific knowledge about the aquifer systems and groundwater dynamics.

To address these challenges, Watershed Organisation Trust has developed a tool called CoDriVE–Visual Integrator. This is a community-driven tool that combines indigenous knowledge with the scientific topographical information and local geohydrology to produce a scaled 3D model of surface and sub-surface characteristics.

3D models, prepared by applying this tool, resulted immensely useful to literate villagers on hydrogeology and aquifer characteristics, as well as to develop a sense that they extract groundwater from a collectively shared aquifer. This tool is immensely supportive for promoting participatory groundwater management and integrating the science, policy, and practice for influencing the behavior of groundwater users and achieving the targets of Sustainable Development Goal 6.
